As soon as something happened anywhere in France - a catastrophe, social unrest, a discovery or an invention - postcards would be published and sent to the four corners of France. Postcards were also used to announce the arrival of longer correspondence, and it is not rare to see just a few words such as “I’ll write tomorrow” on the back of postcards of this period. In short, they had a number of different uses which is difficult to imagine nowadays and millions were sold every year.
